Yee Yang Yang 1 - Universiti Putra Malaysia 0

Universiti Putra Malaysia has officially been pawned. GG to undergraduate Yee Yang Yang and friends for initiating one of the biggest upset in the history of Malaysia's local universities. David has finally slayed the Goliath after all.

Do not ask me why the quality of this video is so bad. I am puzzled as well since all the previous videos that I have uploaded in YouTube turned out to be pretty good.

Office arsenals

With the amount of time that I spend in the office, it would be blasphemous to deny that the tiny little cubicle where I...

  • place my ass at
  • accumulate mental stress and pressure with no opportunity to release them
  • curse and scold cust... I mean praise and thank customers
... almost every day has grown to be my 2nd home.

Compared to my colleagues, my cubicle is pretty empty and I do not put much effort in decorating / renovating this puny space to match my personality. Moreover, in less than 1 year, I have been moved from cubicles to cubicles for a total of 6 times. Tell me, who in his right state of mind would want to tire himself silly by moving stuffs around with the constant cubicle remapping?

Without further ado, allow me to introduce the essential elements in my cubicle that I cannot live without:

Computer

Standard equipment to access databases, log cases and locate information. The only office without a computer is the washroom. In my case, 2 monitors are required due to the number of applications that I have to run and view at the same time.

Telephone

The only office equipment that grant the customers ability to complain, scold, yell, threaten and curse at me.

Food

The only way I can utilize my mouth whenever I do not have to speak to the customers. Instant noodles are to be consumed during night shift only while biscuits are available all day long. If you think these tidbits are company sponsored, it is certainly time for you to wake up.

Water bottle

The smaller the water bottle is, the more rounds to the pantry I would have to make. *SMACK* The only reason I am stuck with this small water bottle is due to its stainless steel attribute. :P

Miscellaneous

Keychain from Paris and postcard from Vietnam to remind myself on how unfortunate my life is to be trapped in this puny cubicle. Meanwhile, the photo is to keep track on the number of colleagues that have left the company.

Varsity Clown Vice-Chancellor is blind

As expected, the recent Universiti Putra Malaysia incident was not been covered comprehensively by local newspapers. After spending some time scouring through the Internet, I managed to land myself an article with the aforementioned university's Vice-Chancellor ATTEMPTING to explain his officers' version of the incident.

The article originated from Malaysiakini which requires paid subscription therefore leaving me with no choice but to copy the article from YB Lim Kit Siang.

Oh, did I mention that the Vice-Chancellor is blind?

UPM VC defends seizure of student’s laptop
Sep 18, 07 8:24pm

Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) vice-chancellor Nik Mustapha R Abdullah today defended the action of campus authorities in seizing a student activist’s laptop and 12 other items during a spot check on his hostel room.

In a two-page media statement (see below), Nik Mustapha (left) said the student, Yee Yang Yang, was suspected of having leaflets produced by ‘unregistered’ organisations and that his laptop contained pornographic material.

He said the authorities acted according to procedure and described Yee’s accusation that UPM was attempting to intimidate him due to his involvement in student activism as a “lie.”

“The action taken by the UPM security department was in accordance with the rules and regulations that relate to disciplinary violations made by Yee. His accusations are lies,” said the VC.

He said on Sept 14, the security department was notified by the Students Supreme Council (MTM) and Dorm 13 of a spate of mobile phone thefts in the dorm.

They had asked the security department to conduct a room-to-room search in Block C, 13th College where Yee (right) was staying.

“It was during this search that we found leaflets, donation cards and other documents belonging to an unregistered organisation. This was in violation of Article 12(1) of the Universities and University Colleges Act (UUCA) 1971,” said Nik Mustapha.

The VC added that Yee’s actions had also violated UPM’s student disciplinary guidelines which prohibited the publication, printing or distribution of leaflets without the university’s approval.

“Furthermore, Yee said that he lost his matrix card and the laptop in his room was not his. He also said that the battery of the laptop had died. But when the security personnel checked, his matrix card was with him and his laptop functioned well,” he said.

Pornographic material

Nik Mustapha argued that since Yee had lied about his matrix card and laptop, security personnel had good reasons to be suspicious and to confiscate the student’s laptop, pen-drive, MP4 player, CDs, mobile phone and the leaflets.

He also claimed that Yee had agreed to have these items brought to the security department.

According to the security department, that upon checking the laptop, a vast amount of pornographic material were found and this was in violation of Article 19(1) of the UUCA.

Nik Mustapha said on Sept 15, Yee and a group of students had gathered at the security department’s office and demanded that his belongings be returned.

“When the staff there told him that investigations were ongoing and his belongings could not be returned as yet, the group acted aggressively and obstructed the officers from performing their duty,” he added.

There was a tense stand-off between the students and Zamali Samsi, the head of the university’s Special Task Unit, a student-monitoring outfit which is part of the campus security.

The students stood in front and the back of the vehicle carrying Zamali to stop him from leaving until they got their letter of acknowlegement listing out the items that were taken from Yee. [see video]

According to the VC, the student affairs department is currently investigating the matter.

Yee had previously claimed that the university authorities had acted against him because of his involvement in the ‘opposition’ camp.

Rival students groups - known as anti-establishment and pro-government factions - are already in the midst of campaign preparations for the soon to be held campus polls.

Last year, the anti-establishment group - who are generally regarded to be pro-opposition - had boycotted the election.

Kenyataan Media Naib Canselor UPM
17 September 2007

Naib Canselor
Universiti Putra Malaysia
Serdang, Selangor

I believe that all of my blog readers are pretty well versed in both English and Malay languages therefore no explanation is required.

At the same time, there is nothing much to argue here since I am no representative of Mr. Yee Yang Yang. There are just some brainless points presented by the Varsity Clown which - pardon me, I mean Vice-Chancellor - are so wrong that I cannot help but to rebut him from the perspective of an undergraduate.

WTF?! It requires 8 cases of theft before they decided to conduct a spot check on the residential college? If there were previous checks conducted and no suspect apprehended, what makes them think that the 8th spot check would generate result?

Again, WTF?! Bringing back some brochures / leaflets / pamphlets is a crime? Not admitting the items in your room as yours is a crime? If that was the case, I WAS a very guilty undergraduate for having my coursemates' laptops / USB drives and at the same time, possessing a number of spam pamphlets promoting multi-layered marketing and instant profit business.

The laptop might no be his. Fine, I can accept that. But what do the leaflets, USB drives, MP4 player, multiple CDs and a mobile telephone have to do with the case?

On second thought, why not confiscate along his underpants? Who knows maybe the smell is different compared to his groin area?

Included below is the written acknowledgement that Universiti Putra Malaysia hesitantly issued with the condition that the undergraduate and his fellow friends must stand in front of a car akin to a set of bowling pins.

How a set of unrelated items can help in determining whether the suspect is a thief. GENIUS!

The victim did give his consent for the items to be confiscated but WAIT, it does not end here. He gave his permission but with the condition that a written acknowledgement to be issued to him on the record of items taken. The officer, in their attempt to prove that buffaloes originated from Malaysia, refused to do so which led to all this ruckus in the first place.

It is an undeniable fact that possessing pornographic materials in your PC, room or heck, even in your brain is a big no-no. But tell me, how many of the male undergraduates' PC does not contain a single pornographic material? In my days of being an undergraduate, I have bear witness to Chinese, Indians, Malays and other races watching pornographic movies with their room door open wide. Do not even attempt to brand me as a racist for I arranged the 3 major races based on alphabetical order and being an Indian or Malay does not mean that you are any better / worse than the Chinese.

If Universiti Putra Malaysia wants to be fair, conduct a minesweep across the whole institution and... wait a minute... Universiti Putra Malaysia = fair? Haha... please do pardon my baseless imagination.

Err... Mr. Varsity Clown, are you really blind? With the video as clear as crystal-clear crystal, what more can you ask for? The undergraduate and his friends were there to obtain a written acknowledgement which YOUR officer flatly rejected. Anymore than that and we will have a new myth to replace the legend of Puteri Gunung Ledang.

A good example of not walking the talk. Ever heard of the idiot... I mean idiom Empty vessels make the most noise?

The tribe victim has spoken

The victim has explained himself to the mass media. Now, when is Universiti Putra Malaysia going to put forward their version of the story? Are we going to witness another "Everything is under control and the university will investigate this matter internally" tale?

"I am Yee Yang Yang and this is my story."

Dare to die for what is right

Just about a year ago, Universiti Putra Malaysia was suddenly thrown into the limelight with the release of YouTube videos depicting a group of 40+ pro-establishment cockroaches cornering 6 anti-establishment undergraduates. Heck... even cockroaches can be Stephen Chow's Siu Keong whereas these barbaric rascals are nothing but junks.

Round 1, FIGHT!

Round 2, FIGHT!

Now, let us throw these outdated videos aside and proceed on with current issue.

Today, Universiti Putra Malaysia has successfully gained public interest again in 2 consecutive years. This time the HEP (Hal Ehwal Pelajar / Student Affairs Department) staffs confiscated a few belongings of a particular undergraduate and refused to issue a written acknowledgement.

Now correct me if my equation is wrong but I believe that (taking others belonging) + (not admitting to the action) = (SNATCH / STEAL / ROBBERY). What more is there to discuss, Mr. Policeman? I shall not elaborate much since I am not a first-hand source and you can read more at Malaysiakini.tv and Jeff Ooi's Screenshots. Attached below is the video for you to judge by yourself on why there is a brain drain issue in this Bolehland.

Undergraduates owning.

One of the few observations that I would like to highlight here is the spirit of righteousness, cooperation and courage shown by the group of undergraduates in the last video. They dare to confront and oppose the guilty party even though the battle is equivalent to Davids against Goliaths.

Tell me, how many of our friends would be there to support us if we were to be the victims? Most would probably shun us and prefer not to involve themselves in going against the authority even though it was damn clear on who is right and wrong. To be honest, I really cannot imagine which of my friends would dare to stand in front of the car just because I was being wronged.

Kudos to these gutsy undergraduates for standing firm on what is right and for this, you all have my utmost respect!

At 05:36 minutes into the video, an interesting reply was directed to the staff while he is opening the door:
Undergraduate A: Open discussion!
Undergraduate B: Open discussion lah!
Staff Y: Ahh... Kamu student ke ape? Kamu belajar buat... (Ahh... You are student or what? You study...)
Undergraduate A: Kamu... kamu pegawai juga orang. Kita student juga orang. (You... you as a staff is human. We as students are human too.)

In my own personal interpretation, strip both parties off their positions and you would have a group of normal human beings standing on the same level as each other.

Another interesting moment would be at 06:22 when the victim was ordered to enter the room alone:
Staff Z: Kenapa apa hal pula you nak masuk? (What business do you have to enter as well?)
Undergraduate C: Kita tak tahu nak... nak... cakap... (We do not know... to... speak...)
Staff Z: You tak percaya sama polis ke? (You do not believe the police?)
Undergraduate C: Saya percaya. (I believe.)
Staff Z: So?
Undergraduate C: Kenapa saya tak boleh masuk? Apa... Apa pasal... (Why am I not allowed to go in? Why... why...)
Undergraduate D: Kenapa nak bertutup? (Why must it be closed?)

I nearly laughed when the issue of police trust was being brought into discussion especially with the not-so-old news about police's involvement in the Atlantuya murder case. The undergraduates on the other hand, were smart enough not to be distracted with an off-topic question.

Last but not least at 07:57, with the mounting pressure, a silly question was blurted out:
Staff X: Tapi saya sangat hairan la. You ada apa kena-mengena dengan dia yang you sibuk sangat? (But I am puzzled. What is your relation to him that you are so busybody about?)

Has he not heard of the phrase Bersatu kita teguh, bercerai kita roboh (United we stand, divided we fall) before?

If Tien Han is a Technical Support Specialist

Yesterday was Malaysia's 50th National Day. While most of my friends have the whole day off, I was confined in my puny little cubicle taking up calls and replying emails. However, thanks to Tien Han, my day was not as boring and mundane as it was supposed to be. Attached below is a small portion of the MSN chat that I have extracted out due to the hilarious suggestion that Tien Han proposed:

Now, if only my conversation with customers were not recorded, I would have definitely tried his aforementioned suggestions. Nonetheless, I guess I owed him a meal for brightening up my gloomy day. Mushroom soups, anyone?
